Past World President Mary Bennett receives Honorary Degree from University of Galway
Mary Bennett, a distinguished figure in the travel and tourism industry and a Past World President of Skål International, was awarded an honorary Degree of Doctor of Economic Science by the University of Galway.
This prestigious accolade is the highest honor the university bestows.
Mary Bennett, born Mary O’Donoghue in Boston, County Clare, in 1938, has had a remarkable career marked by her dedication to tourism and business development. After starting her career at the Great Southern Hotel in Galway, she went on to establish the ‘Capri’ Guesthouse in Salthill with her husband, Eddie Bennett. Her involvement in the Salthill Tourism Development Association and her leadership roles in various tourism organizations have significantly contributed to the growth of the industry.
In 2002, Mary made history as the first female World President of Skål International, the largest association of travel and tourism professionals globally. Her entrepreneurial spirit also led her to establish 'The Treasure Chest', a landmark retail business in Galway, which she managed successfully for several decades.
Mary’s contributions extend beyond tourism. She has been a driving force in Galway’s commercial and industrial development, serving as President of Galway Chamber and National President of Chambers Ireland. Her civic engagement includes founding the Galway City Business Association and serving on the boards of several charities.
